The Deal of a Lifetime

Hi. It’s your dad. You’ll be waking up soon, it’s Christmas Eve morning in Helsingborg, and I’ve killed a person. That’s not how fairy tales usually begin, I know. But I took a life. Does it make a difference if you know who it was?

How do you finish that sentence without giving away the twist, the center of the story? You can’t, so I won’t. I’ll just tell you that what makes The Deal of a Lifetime what it is may not be what you think. Or maybe it will be. I don’t know. It was kind of what I expected, but also not. This wasn’t my favorite by Fredrik Backman. THAT would be And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer. Both are novellas. Like Every Morning, there are whimsical illustrations to expand the brevity into (small) book-size. I guess this one is more accurately a short story.

I woke up just after 5:00 yesterday. Would have liked a little more sleep, but I love how much easier it is to wake up when it’s already daylight. Had to work at 9:00. Subbing at another library, enjoying it. Picked up a book.
