The Deal of a Lifetime

Hi. It’s your dad. You’ll be waking up soon, it’s Christmas Eve morning in Helsingborg, and I’ve killed a person. That’s not how fairy tales usually begin, I know. But I took a life. Does it make a difference if you know who it was?

A letter that will never be read, because the writer…

How do you finish that sentence without giving away the twist, the center of the story? You can’t, so I won’t. I’ll just tell you that what makes The Deal of a Lifetime what it is may not be what you think. Or maybe it will be. I don’t know. It was kind of what I expected, but also not. This wasn’t my favorite by Fredrik Backman. THAT would be And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer. Both are novellas. Like Every Morning, there are whimsical illustrations to expand the brevity into (small) book-size. I guess this one is more accurately a short story.

You can check out First Lines of other Fredrik Backman books here.
